MERRY GIFTMAS // OUR GIVING PROJECT

Christmas is indeed one of the most anticipated times of the year. Christmas is identical with gifts and presents. And I would say, I tend to uplift my expectation in receiving the gifts this time around. No difference with my toddler who always plead me to give him a present every time we visit Target or Kmart. I do not blame him though. I realised, it is easy for the younger generation to get wrapped in the commercialism of the season and miss the true meaning of the Christmas when they are bombarded by the media and advertisements specifically targeted towards them.

When you think about Christmas; there will not be Christmas without Christ. We will not be able to celebrate this jolly season without someone gave life to Emanuel 2000 years ago. Giving is the true spirit of Christmas. And Christmas is the perfect season to teach your kids about giving.

My hope is to get him understand that life does not revolves around him, there’s much joy in giving than receiving, that God blessed him to be a blessing.

Therefore, I planned a special project this year called “cookie by Jared”. This is a “giving training project” where I am focusing on my child’s involvement from the production till distribution process. Disclaimer: It may cause parents to do more of cleaning works. But hey…ENJOY IT! ENJOY THE PROCESS! HAVE FUN! Having fun with your child in the kitchen builds positive memories, good vibes, and good food.

First… I let him do some of the dirty works – After I did all the measurements, I let Jared to mix and cut the dough by himself using the Christmas cookie cutters. yes, you can imagine the mess right now. Ha. But, both of us found this process interesting. He listened and followed my directions step by step by asking me “what’s next?” again and again. He was patiently and expectant at the same time waiting for the cookies to be cooked golden and crispy.

Second… I let him make a cookie name list of his school friends – This is a funny process, because he would add some names and cross some due to his favouritism. But, I love the fact that he understood how to give return to good people in his life. And, I used this chance to teach him an important value in life; kindness. He should be or/and do good to anyone not based on what they have done to you, but based on what do you want them to do to you. “You will always reap what you sow”

Third… I let him hand in the cookie to his friends – Here’s the last step when he could feel the joy of giving. When some of his friends said “thank you with a big grins” on their face. Until this morning, before we left home for school, he asked me some chocolates and candy canes to share to his friends today. But, I gotta say no this time. There’s a limit of weekly sugar intakes for each toddler, right?!

This project will become a tradition in the family. Because I see a lot benefits from teaching your kids on giving from the early age. It builds up a good character and boost self-esteem of the young ones.

And I am super proud of myself and Jared to be able to share the love and kindness together.

Well, from us to you. Merry Christmas. May this jolly season brings you love, peace and joy!! X

Love,

Kenny

OUR STORY – FIRST BUMPDATE

Welcome to my first bumpdate. YES!! you hear me. A BUMP! which literally means I am pregnant with my second child. And for this reason, I was being absent for a while from blogging.

Honestly, at this time pregnancy, I feel constantly tired as my foetus grows bigger rapidly while taking care of a busy toddler. Please, don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t complaining at all for falling pregnant, in fact, I was so joyful to be able to carry another little human within my body. It wasn’t an easy journey for me and my husband to conceive with our second baby. Till, we found out the 2 pink lines around 19 weeks ago – it’s positive ++.

THE STORY

It was 6am in the morning, I woke up with such a big curiosity and anxiety. I have been getting mild nauseous every night for 3 weeks in a row, then I realised that my period is supposed to coming soon. But, I refused to get my hopes up on falling pregnant this time, cause this jinx has been happening multiple times in the past 2 years; where I delusive myself for falling pregnant. My brain worked so hard on sending false reports to my soul, which confused and drained my hormones and body; it delayed the blood circulation in my body then caused me a “late” period. blah blah blah… this is my biggest fear; to get my hopes crushed once again. Dear God, NOT THIS TIME.

The hardest part of this journey is not about failing to conceive. BUT, finding zero faults to conceive. It is easier to get back up when you fall on a solid ground than a flimsy ground. Infertility is acceptable when you find any difficulties medical proof within your body. Whereas in our case, we found NO FAULTS in our body that cause the barrenness. Two of us were healthy af. Nonetheless, no sperm (not one), landed on to my ovary successfully. What could go wrong??!! It was so instant with our first baby, but NOT with the second one. I am sorry to hear that, but I was struggling to find one reasonable supports for this fact I am facing today. This was tough for me, for I am a woman. I started to question my body, blamed my husband, hate other pregnant women, doubted my faith, and mad at myself. I was living in jealousy and insecurity for almost 12 months. As a matter of fact, I, who was physically barren at that time felt the the call to be a mother more passionately than the woman with many children on her arms. You see, often in our place of lack there is a deep desire. Your desire is amplified and empowered because it reflects a God-given capacity meant to produce fruit. That moment, I realised that only God who has the capacity to produce fruit; not the doctor, not my husband, not my womb, not even myself. All controls are in His hands. And He knows our silent desire, and He will give it to us as long as we’re keep leaning on to Him.

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalms 37:4

I don’t know why, that morning was kinda different. I felt a really strong gut in my heart that I need to do another test-pack. Then, I opened my drawer, picked the last test-pack stick of the year, and I guess, I braved myself to take a leap of faith while closing both eyes for 3 minutes (trust me: it felt like the longest 3 minutes in my entire life). The moment i saw the result, tears started to come down, my heart was overwhelmed with joy and disbelief. Andri was overseas for ministry trip the day I found the big news, and wanting to avoid all the dramas and over-reaction from anyone relatives and friends, I decided to not spill any beans on the table till Andri’s back in town.

2 weeks of ridiculous morning sickness and fatigue was tough without your hubby, finally… the day came, we reunited with such a thrilled comforting baby news few weeks after our Anniversary Day. What could I say?! GOD IS GOOD. ALL THE TIME. IN EVERY SEASON.

What a highlight for our family this year! WE ARE 24 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH OUR SECOND BABY. The burps, the punches, the kicks, the need to pee every 5 minutes,  I can strongly feel them everyday. I am feeling pregnant again. wohoooo!!

And little update from the big brother, he’s SOOOO EXCITED to have another addition to the squad. He greets the baby every morning and throws the blame of his wrongdoings every time-out time. Smells like a love-hate real-tionship has currently building up.

What a way to start off this joyous festive season. I hope you will find courage once again to get your hopes up during this Christmas season, for the best gift you could ever imagined has born 2000 years ago. He has a name. His name is HOPE. He is Jesus Christ.

EASY RECIPE // CHIA PUDDING RECIPE (WORTH TO TRY)

I am a big fan of chia seeds. Apart from its tasty taste, they are my mini dietary powerhouses. They are packing more calcium than milk, more antioxidants than blueberries and more Omega-3 than Salmon.

A tablespoon (15gr) of chia seeds equals to 3gr of omega3, 6gr of dietary fibre, 3gr of complete protein.

There are so many ways to consume chia seeds; you can mix it to your yoghurt, add them to soup, or top them on your salad. But the house favourite is chia pudding. Oh yeah! who can resist this sweet indulgence. But, take a note, that today we’re talking about a healthy pudding. So, guilts go away!!

Here is my 5 minutes legit healthy pudding recipe:

Ingredients

2 cups of coconut milk (homemade or natural)

1/2 cup of chia seeds

1/2 tbsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup manuka honey

How To (5 minutes)

  1. Blend coconut milk, vanilla extract and manuka honey together in a high speed
  2. Whisk in chia seeds
  3. Pour the mixture onto jars, and stir them well occasionally within the first hour.
  4. Store them in the fridge for at least 4 hours until the chia seeds get gelled.

To Serve

  • Add some toppings: whatever you prefer, blueberries, strawberries, granola, almond flakes, biscuit crumbs, maple syrup, honey drizzle.

Kids Matter / Get Creative

  • Most of the kids are not impressed by the appearance of chia seeds on their bowl, so let’s make a smoothies version of chia pudding. By blending all the ingredients above in a high-speed blender. Or you might want to give more appealing colour to your pudding, by adding 1/4 cup cocoa powder and blend them all together. Pour them into baby food container or any jars. Lastly, store them in the refrigerator and let the chia seeds do its magic.

Alright, you are just finished reading through my recipe and thinking “that is so easy”. Let me answer you… “hell yeahhhhh!!” It is easier to make it than to read it.

Chia puddings can be stored in the fridge for 5 days. Batch some up on Sunday evening for the coming week, and make your life easier. AMEN…say all mums ever. 😉

HEALTHY SCREEN TIMES – IS IT POSSIBLE ? (PLUS GIVEAWAY ALERT)

SO, today, while J’s having his long nap, I am keen to talk about screen times. One of the feminist issue which has become our childhood and motherhood new enemy.

I have teamed up with KidloLand; Educational App For Toddlers and Pre-schoolers.

First, what is screen time? Screen time is the time you spend watching TV or DVDs, using computers, playing video or hand-held computer games, or using tablets or smartphones.

Screen time can be:

  • interactive – for example laying video games, online tools to draw pictures, communicating via Skype or Facetime.
  • not interactive – for example, sitting still and watching movies, TV programs or YouTube videos
  • educational – for example, doing maths homework online
  • recreational – for example, playing games or watching videos for fun.

I understand that screen time had become an enemy to our childhood and motherhood. But, let us be honest, screen times do make mothers’ lives easier. As mothers, we’re supposed to embrace—or at least nobly suffer through—all the challenges that parenting throws at us. We’re supposed to accept having little people at our heels while we’re trying to buy the groceries, make dinner, or go to the bathroom. We’re supposed to accept the exhaustion that comes from working a full day at the office and a second shift at home before falling into bed for an inevitably interrupted sleep. We’re supposed to accept the isolation that comes from raising children in a world that regards a crying child as a crime against restaurant patrons or airplane travellers.

The mother who hands her child a smartphone is taking the easy way out of these challenges. But since so much of parenting consists of situations in which there is no easy way out, I’m deeply grateful when somebody offers me a cheat. And I mean a healthy cheat – it helps you to get things done without killing your rights to feel good about yourself. It gives you hope to get through the next hour.

A healthy screen time lifestyle means screen times limits for your child.

What is screen time limits?

Screen time limits are about making sure your child enjoys lots of healthy, fun activities – both with and without screens. Limits mean looking at the time your child spends on screens and making sure that the screen contents are balanced; interactive, not-interactive, educational, and recreational.

As J’s getting older, I become more selective on choosing the apps he could play on my smartphone/IPad. And I was so happy when KidloLand reached out to me recently, offering 3-months free subscription to their app for toddlers & preschoolers, and write a review as the return. We have tried the app for sometimes and I am proudly categorised this app as a HEALTHY APP. It covers 4 elements of the screen contents (interactive, not-interactive, educational, recreational).

Here’s the answer for a Healthy Screen Application (IPhone, IPad, Android)

KidloLand has so many range of activities from nursery rhymes videos, drawing tools, to tracing letter guides. Yes, you get ALL of them in just one app. How cool is that! ONE HEALTHY STOP FOR ALL. It is hard for me to not love KidloLand. And here’s my honest experience with KidloLand.

J was quite eloquent with shapes, colors, and letters since he was 18 months. But never put any interests on writing. After using KidloLand for the past few weeks, he improves his interests & skills in writing the letter massively by playing with the “learn to trace”. KidloLand provides such a fun and creative way to teach this pre-schooler about writing step by step. And what’s more good about it is it is mess-free. You could simply write and delete it on screen.

The other activities we love the most is the vehicle games. J loves moving vehicles and kinda obsessed with them. So, he loves playing this game; which help him learn about following instructions.

Once again, thank you so much KidloLand for inventing a healthy screen contents and experiences. I highly recommend this app for kids and parents. It is a safe app, recommended by 400+ mom bloggers.

Remember, that screen time limit does not mean stopping your kid from watching the screens or playing with their video games. It is about creating a healthy balanced lifestyle for them to follow.

SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

Family and Fashion; two things that are very closed to my heart. So, when Kobi & Roo reached out to me for their first ever collaboration with the entire family, I was so thrilled!  AND…I can not say NO. So here we are representing this urban apparel brand for modern family originally from UK.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

And I am believer of a small beginning. Everything starts with a seed. And when you water them regularly, it WILL definitely grow.

Nothing was born BIG. But all things was born TO BE BIG.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin,…” – Zachariah 4:10

Big shouts to all the small shops across the world, I am proud of all of your boldness and courage. Including my dearest friend, Kobi & Roo. It is a small shop with a big potential. Run by a multitasking mom of two, Ezi. (love you girllll. X)

And today I had a chance to interview her further about her childhood dream and how this small shop has changed her life and her community. SO, here we go!!

1. Firstly…I must know what made you choose the name Kobi&Roo?
Kobi & Roo was inspired by my two kids Nigerian middle names. My son is Kobimdi (Kobi) and my daughter is Chierika (Roo) They both inspired the brand.
2. What inspired you to get into business and start your own clothing label?
I have always dreamt of owning my own fashion business from a young age. I finally took the bold step to set up my own modern clothing label during my maternity leave with my second child. I feel great ideas come during maternity leave (haha!) I was inspired by my kids. I love shopping for them but hate the stress of going to the shops and shuffling through piles of clothes. I am more of an online shopper, so i knew a lot of other moms are like me and want modern, unisex clothes for their kids and would prefer to buy it online. I also like the excitement i get from knowing that the postman would bring me a surprise soon and i know many people would too.
3. Why do you go for small business? What impact does it make to your life?
Small business is very important to me. I feel It is where we all start from. Start small grow big. I believe small business is a learning process, a way to make an impact to your family, community, and the world in general. I like the fact that small businesses support each other and many more people are supporting small businesses. Gone are the days of competition, we now live in a world where collaboration is king.
4. I know for myself that I struggle to find work life balance and I feel as though I am always working, How do you manage the two?
It is still a struggle as 24 hours just doesn’t seem to be enough. We as mums are blessed to be multitaskers. we try our best to wing it all. I do have my moments with balancing work and life, but the good thing about being a mom and having an online business is that you can work at your own schedule. No deadlines and no pressure. I try to balance my life by doing the most important things first, which is nurturing my family before i get down to business.
5. I know for myself too that running small business is a tough gig, with limited time and resources we have, how you overcome those and stay motivated?
I stay motivated by trusting God to see me through. I always put God first in my life as he is the giver of all good things. I also try to stay motivated by keeping to schedule. Like if i need to update my social media or create a new product for my store. Sometimes when you feel really exhausted, its best to give yourself a break and the motivation will be back if you are passionate about what you are doing.
6. Lastly, what do you think about the community’s response to small businesses today? What changes do its make to the community?
I’m so impressed with the way people support small businesses. I tell you, social media is a gold mine filled with lots of talented and creative small businesses making an impact in their community. Being a small business owner, i have met some amazing small business owners and we encourage one another through regular small business Saturday shout outs, charity and fund raising activities, and regular raffle draws. its a small business revolution.

Today, Kobi & Roo is running its 2nd brand enthusiast search for kids and has been featured on some local page. Way to go girl!!

ANZAC DAY OUT

A “Sunday” on weekdays? I’LL TAKE IT. Here I dumped some of the photos taken during our family day out on Anzac Day. Well, since most of the brunch cafes and shopping mall were closed for operations, we decided to take J’s out to amusement park. And we chose Luna Park, the most iconic amusement park in Sydney, New South Wales. I will be honest, most of the rides were pretty old-school but mannnn…location wise, Luna Park is just one of the most beautiful spot I would go back for 52 times in a year with same level of excitement. Located on the northern shore of Sydney Harbour, there are simply many things you can explore around the area. I would say, I am quite lucky to live here today. I AM BLESSED.

Well, it is an opened air amusement park, so, raining is its biggest enemy. Unfortunately, that was exactly what happened during our visit. The first half day was wonderful then few hours later after midday, the rain hit. We, as a parent, were sad for a probability that our kid wouldn’t be able to enjoy his free time at the park. But, it turned out the other way around, J was really calm and collective at those present moment, he embraced the rain and told us word by word “Jared helps mommy to hold the umbrella”, and my heart melted. That was exactly my mood booster for the day. AGAIN. I was reminded, there’s always one beauty out of your messy wet soaking day. Well, on my case, it’s more than one though. J enjoyed his time with some Smurfs fellas and we (daddy & mommy) enjoyed some (non) extreme rides too. We finished the day off by taking some killer shots on the harbour. And here I am dumping some of previous photos taken by my talented husband. Ps: he is a legend. He carried 2 bags (nappy & camera bag), held the umbrella, while taking pictures of two of us under the rain. I can’t imagine life without him. He never complains and he make things happen. He even said to me that “part of my vow was to take countless photos of you”.

I JUST LOVE HIM SO MUCH MORE THAN HE COULD EVER IMAGINE.

EASY RECIPE // WINTER KIDS MEAL

Dinner time in the house is my favourite time. We all called it “family dinner” simply because this is the only moment where ALL of the family members are able to gather on a table to enjoy the meal after a busy day of individual routines. Perfect time to engage and interact to one another. Sounds perfect aye! (to me at least)

Until I realised, that this toddler is sitting on the same table at the same time with us. Well, that is another story, isn’t it? Often times dinner would be the most unpleasant time of the day. mayday, mayday, mayday….My body was drained out after full day of babysitting/working, cooking dinner and now grumpy toddler is refusing to open his mouth because the plate looks “greeny”. I mean….Seriously?! It is because I have no blue/red clean plate at the time little fella, so just bare with me and pick that god damn beef sausage, and put it in your mouth. Gah.

Then I got a revelation somehow one day, that I gotta prepare meal which comforts their “eyes” and their “tummy”

  1. Comforts their eyes – basically, what they see is what they get. If the presentation itself does not satisfy their sight, the wrong information will directly send to the brain commanding them to lock their mouth. Once they’re happy with what they see, they would surely open their mouth and give it a go. Be mindful to make their favourite element stands out on the plate. In my case, noodles, soup, chicken, and meatballs are the thing that J loves the most. So, I put extra effort on that piece and make them as visual as it can be. Hiding veggies is always wise to do, add them to your homemade meatballs mixture. It’s a winner for the whole family. Yeahhh!!
  2. Comforts their tummy Next step is making sure that they consume enough nutritions intake to their tummy for the day. Eating together increase healthy eating habits and provides a model for children to carry with them into adulthood. Studies show family dinners increase the intake of fruits and vegetables; families who eat dinner together tend to eat fewer fried foods and drink less soda; and family meal frequency is linked to the intake of protein, calcium, and some vitamins. I am struggling to get my protein son to consume veggies, but after I implement this new family dinner rule for a while, I am glad to report you that he slowly improving his tolerance for veggies. And for this colder season, I am using a lot of in-season produce too, like carrots, orange, citrus, lemon, garlic, ginger (they are powerful to boost your immune system).
  3. Spend less time on the kitchen –  please do not spend too much energy and time on the kitchen (unless for special occasion). 30-45 minutes max would be the ideal time from preparation to presentation. Spend more time to sit down and have a nice conversation with one another. Here are some killer recipes you can do under 30minutes. They are super delicious healthy on low budget.

4 WAYS TO FIGHT OFF THE WINTER COLDS

Hey guys! Hope you are doing well these days. Hope the house is coping well with the weather transition lately.

Well…with the winter months fast-approaching, kids will soon be picking up those dreaded winter coughs and colds. To help stay on top of your kids’ splutters and tackle any nasties this winter, it is important to stock up the medicine cabinet with the winter essentials! Well, the philosophy says… better prepared than sorry. For this matter, I trust Little Range Winter Package which includes the following:

  • Little Coughs
  • Little Eyes
  • FESS Little Nose

Below I shared some tips to fight off this cold months:

  1. Stock up the right food produces for the season – build a strong immune system is very important for the season. Stock up some great powerful and colourful range of fruits and vegs to your pantry, such as, citrus, kiwi, spinach, broccoli, carrots, garlic and ginger. They are good for immune system. Try also including one daily serving of probioitic-rich foods/snacks to their meal plan, such as yoghurt (plain, unsweetend is best), plain greek yoghurt, and miso soup. Add them to their fruit salad bowl or let them have a dip.
  2. Practice good hygiene – children often forget basic hygiene practices like washing their hands and covering their mouth when they cough. Make sure you remind them wash their hands before meals or sharing food. It’s also common for children to rub their noses and eyes. Be sure to have tissues at the ready for their noses and eye wipes handy such as Little Eyes to help clear out the residue from around the eyes. And children are notorious for copying their parents behaviour, be mindful about your hygiene practices to make sure you’re being the best.
  3. Clear out the noses and coughs – The nose is the perfect breeding ground for bugs that can cause colds and flus. Clear out kids’ noses with a saline non-medicated nasal spray such as FESS Little Noses. This will not only help children breathe better, but will also flush away any nasties and clear the nasal passageways. And for those with a cough that can keep everyone up at night use a natural cough syrup such as Little Coughs, which contains ivy leaf extract to offer soothing relief from coughs and chesty congestion. Sleep is one of the best immune boosters of all!
  4. Stay dehydrated – it can be hard to remember to stay hydrated during the cooler months, so soups come in handy in getting varied nutrition and plenty of liquid into our little ones. It is necessary to get creative on preparing the meal for little ones, because they are too creative in picking on the green and non-green stuffs on the plate. It is our responsibility to make sure we prepare a comfort meal for their eyes and their tummy. Meatballs are always the best option to hide some veggies, miso soup paste is a winner for everyone’s tongue, and buckwheat soba makes a healthier choice than pasta. You might our family’s favourite “Miso Soup with Meatballs and Soba Noodles”. Recipe attached on the next blog post under “creates”. Check them out.

Lastly, here’s my direct review on the Little Range Winter Products itself. My son got some cold & flu symptoms since last Easter long weekend. So, I gave him a try of Little Range products. He has been using these products for the past few days, and both of us were very happy with the outcome. Little Fess Noses helps him clear up the blocked nose, Little Coughs improves his sleep during the night, and mommy loves how light and handy the Little Eyes handy package is, it can fit to any type/shape of mommy’s bags. Side note: J loves the flavour and the syrup texture of Little Coughs too. Another happy day. happy kid. happy mommy.

DIY GOLDEN RUSTIC EASTER EGG

WHO’S EGGCITED FOR EASTER?! WE ARE!!

While my boy is so freaking excited to eat tons of chocolate eggs, mommy is so NOT agree on this matter. So, I decided to shift his attention by asking him to decorate foam eggs to add extra details touch to our wooden dinner table in house.

Talks about wood, I am going to create something rustic for this easter. I decided to make a DIY: GOLD RUSTIC EASTER EGG. A perfect decoration for both indoor and outdoor easter festive. A pretty little touch to your dining table and to the tree too.

Let’s get into business now. We’re gonna get a little messy here. These activities are full of splish and splash, I would say the messier the merrier. I didn’t get a chance to take picture during the painting process because we were both soaked up in paint and too afraid to take the camera with me 😦 It was a messy process but again FULL OF FUN! J loved it too. Yeahhh.. who doesn’t like making a mess?! huh.

so….Here are some of the stuffs you need to prepare (you may get most of them on the art & craft shop nearest your place)

And here’s step by step – how to make GOLDEN RUSTIC EASTER EGG:

  1. Mix white poster paint with a dash of brown poster paint to create cream colour.
  2. Dip in the foam eggs into the mixture (cream colour) – leave them to a complete dry.
  3. Use the kids brush, paint roughly some lines on the coloured cream egg with gold poster paint. Leave them to dry.
  4. Cover your table surface with newspapers, cause we’re going messy now. Splish splash the black poster paint on the foam egg by brushing the toothbrush onto the comb until the whole egg covered with black dots. Leave them to dry
  5. Place the eggs on cleaned egg cage.
  6. Voila!! They are ready to beautify your dinner table.

What an easy way to make your DIY rustic eggs, huh? It is rustic yet sophisticated. One easy way to sweeten your dinner table and impress your guests this weekend. Now, clean your house, get the chicken roast and find some unexpected spots to hide the eggs. Hope you all had an amazing Easter Celebration with beloved ones.
